Two highly influential Brazilian albums back-to-back? Por que não?
In the 1960s, the Brazilian military dictatorship established its power over the country. In the city of Bahia , a multifaceted artistic movement emerged, touching on literature, the visual arts, film, theater, and music. Tropicalism , or Tropicalia, takes its name from a sculpture by the artist Hélio Oiticica and aims, quite simply, to explode the constraints – physical, mental, and moral – imposed by Brazilian society. From Bahia, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil will be the spearheads of the musical wing, forcing traditional sounds back onto the terrain previously occupied by British rock or American psychedelia. Or perhaps it's the other way around.
