In my never-ending quest to explore jazz from around the world, I came across this wonderful album by the Pakistani jazz fusion band Jaubi. I’d love to describe the album in a beautifully artistic way, but who am I kidding... Instead, here’s Ammar Kalia’s take on the album.
Opening with the big band swing of Lahori Blues, which features a searing soprano sax solo from Cawthorne, A Sound Heart encompasses everything from intricately arranged homages to jazz greats — Misunderstood (Blues for Mingus) — to fast-paced jazz funk fusions (Wings of Submission), yearning sarangi balladry (Forgive Me) and wistful, piano-led introspection (Reflections of God).
